Andy , I got mine from West Marine I had just bought a new boat and they gave me as a new boat owner 10% off on a trolling motor and a combo unit and both were on sale at the time and also a marine tool kit for free.  I got a great deal by letting them know that I had just bought a new boat . Wouldn't hurt to see if they still do this. And do look into the last years units there are very little changes in them and way less money.

Found out today that the Humminbird 898cSI that I picked out for the boat will not be available until late March/early April.  I cannot wait for that !! After a lot of soul searching (and web serving) I decided to go with a Lowrance HDS-5 Nautic Insight.  I am going to take the chance with Lowrance.....  Bought the unit at Westmarine this afternoon with 6% new boat discount AND they matched the lowest price I could find on the web.  I did buy the additional 3 year West Marine Warranty so that if there is a problem I can swap the unit out, no questions asked.  Am I in heaven...no, not really (you should know the extent of my eternal buyers remorse syndrome), am I glad I will be able to take the boat out next week.... YOU BET !!!

The unit will be gimbal-mounted so that, if needed, I can always add another flush-mounted unit.

Let's go fishing....

I am struggling with this decision too.  So the West Marine warranty lets you trade it out for the Hummingbird if it doesn't work?  Or Lowrance won't fix it timely?  Do they provide that in writing?  Can you provide a link for the warranty terms and conditions?  Thanks.

No, they will provide (at least they said) a new Lowrance unit if and when the one I bought has "issues".  In fact, two years ago I had an issue with a unit (I now know that it was likely a result of a "bug repellent" device on the boat) that I bought online with West Marine and they gave me my money back when I took the unit to the store (it's almost like Walmart).

For those that don't know , the repellent Andy mentioned would be the thermacell mosquito repellent appliance , it works great on bugs but if placed too close to electronic equip. , gps, sounder, plotter etc. it will eat the circuits and melt the screens , needs to be at least 4' away from any electronics on board .If ya don't believe it place one on your center console near your gps ,fishfinder it won't take long to melt the screens .

That's good to know. I got a Thermacell for Christmas to use in the yak. I'll be sure to keep it away from the cell phone screen. I am guessing that it is similar to the screens of the electronics.
